You don't need to press anything beside adding the patch.

And the reason why it didn't work is because the code was trying to access undefined memory address. Depending on how memory was distributed for the game, either it did nothing or it crashed. This depends on your OS version and configuration, libraries/plugins loaded by the game etc. That's why the bug was so inconsistent.
